Ryska trupper ur Estland och Litauen
31/8/1994

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN CONVEYED FROM THE PRIME MINISTER, MR CARL BILDT, TO THE PRESIDENT OF ESTONIA, MR LENNART MERI AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF LATVIA, MR GUNTIS ULMANIS

Wednesday, 31 August 1994

Today, the last Russian troops ﷓ the remains of the Soviet occupation which robbed your country of its freedom and independence for five painful decades ﷓ are leaving Estonian and Latvian territory. This is also a day of happiness and celebration for the Swedish people.

We are happy on your behalf, and we are also pleased about the new opportunities which this event means for all of us.

A new basis for security and cooperation has been established in the North of Europe as a result of the agreements which have been reached. I can assure you that, in the years to come, as in the past, Sweden will endeavour to provide all the assistance we can to support your continued efforts, with the aim of strengthening the foundations of your country's freedom, in cooperation with the rest of Europe, and securing the prosperity which has so long been denied you.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN CONVEYED FROM THE PRIME MINISTER, MR CARL BILDT, TO THE PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA, MR BORIS YELTSIN

Wednesday, 31 August 1994

Today is a day of happiness, as the last Russian troops leave Germany, Estonia and Latvia in accordance with the agreements which have been signed. This means that we can now say that European development has definitely entered a new phase in which former battles and injustices have been left behind.

I would like to express my gratitude for the contributions which you have personally made to make this possible. I can assure you that, in the years to come, as in the past, Sweden will try to contribute actively to further improving good relations in the Baltic Sea area, on the basis of the new principles which apply in the new Europe.

Bildt Blog Comments

In addition to this webpage, and the email letters ongoing since 1994, I have now started a blog as well.

You find it at http://bildt.blogspot.com.

At www.bildt.net you will continue to find articles, speeches and different documents.

At the blog there will be the shorter and perhaps somewhat faster comments.

And the e-letter continues to give at the least an attempt at analys.
