War? Peace?
9/2/2003
No one wants a war over Iraq.
Everyone wants peace.
But what is war? And what is peace?
For the peoples of Iraq, there has been two decades of war.
First a decade of war with Iran. Horrible cost.
Then the invasion of Kuwait and the Gulf War.
And then sanctions, bombings, confrontations.
Today, Iraq is an impoverished country.
60% of the population live on food parcels every two weeks.
The middle class has been destroyed.
Repression continues.
As long as there is Saddam Hussein, there is daily war.
This is the reality.
The key task now is not to start a war.
It is to end a war that has been going on for two decades.
A war felt by the peoples of Iraq on a daily basis.
That goes on today.
This will require regime change in Baghdad.
There is no other way to end the war and start the peace.
